Maybe that explains why some are drawn to it. Or why some run from it.
Sting gave a beautiful speech to a graduating class where he talked about the importance of silence in music. He said “Silence is disturbing. It is disturbing because it is the wavelength of the soul. If we leave no space in our music…then we rob the sound we make of a defining context. It is often music born from anxiety to create more anxiety. It’s as if we’re afraid of leaving space. Great music’s as much about the space between the notes as it is about the notes themselves”.
Maybe that space in between is not just “in between”. Maybe the silence is ever-present and everything ELSE is in between.
Maybe the silence is what to create from! But to create something new, we have to be comfortable with nothing.
Imagine a plain white canvas. If you add a red circle, that white canvas is no longer empty. That red circle has colour, shape, size, dimension, language etc all because it has a context. Having the circle distinguished from white canvas creates whole other worlds!
That white canvas…that silence…that background…call it what you want, but I call it love. (I’m sure there’s a 90’s song there that I can’t pinpoint at this moment lol!! But I digress!!)
Love is the ever present background! Our white canvas to create our words, our relationships, our jobs, our life…our worlds….
I think in those moments of silence, you touch your soul. The more you do that, the more things start opening up.
Like your heart.
When love is the context of our life, our experience of life forever alters. You see more beauty. You hear things newly. All your senses are heightened.
Everything transforms – mind, body and soul!!
That is, if you are ready to listen….
